Ryan Bass is the Chief Information Officer at Portland State University, where he leads a comprehensive IT organization responsible for enterprise applications, cybersecurity, computing and network infrastructure, research computing, classroom AV, the service desk, and more.
He provides strategic technology leadership for Portland State University, driving innovation and operational excellence across all IT functions. Under Ryan’s guidance, the IT organization has been recognized for its outstanding performance and positive work environment, including being named one of Computerworld’s Top Places to Work in IT for 8 years in a row. He champions initiatives that enhance the university’s capabilities and ensures technology aligns with institutional goals, fostering a secure, resilient, and modern digital environment for the campus community.
Ryan is actively engaged in both regional and national IT organizations, including EDUCAUSE, the Northwest Academic Computing Consortium (NWACC), and Link Oregon. Ryan currently serves on the board of directors for Link Oregon, and chairs the NWACC Strategic Issues program, including acting as the program chair for NWACC’s 2025 CIO Council meeting.
A native of Portland, Oregon, Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Seattle University and an MBA from Portland State University. He began his career in higher education in 2005, driven by a strong conviction in its transformative power and positive impact on individuals’ lives. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, volunteering in his local community, and exploring the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest.
